Corner castings are the three-hole Corten steel blocks that form the corners of shipping containers. They are the structural elements used to lift Corten steel shipping containers and secure them to any mode of transport, such as ships, trains or road vehicles. They are also the connection points where containers are locked together, as in container stacks on a container ship.

So that all lifting and container handling equipment works correctly worldwide, these corner castings have holes standardized to a tolerance of just millimetres.

There are eight corner castings in total: top left, top right, bottom right and bottom left, as seen from outside the container on its end and door faces. Every shipping container uses two of each of the four variants.

The most obvious difference is between top and bottom corner castings. Bottom castings have two stadium-shaped holes on their sides (plus a large stacking hole underneath), while top castings have two differently shaped side holes and a stacking hole on top. Top castings have a stadium hole on the long side of the container and a shield hole on the front or rear end. Note that fittings match the shield and stadium holes, but NOT the much larger stacking holes on top of the top casting and underneath the bottom castings.
